In Syrian city an orderly evacuation of rebels

Maher Kayyal, the head of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent's operations in Homs, said they were informed of three medical emergency cases, adding that the number might rise to six.

Opposition fighters and their families getting in a bus, following their evacuation from the rebel-held Al-Waer neighborhood in the central city of Homs on Saturday, during the first phase of the Russian-supervised deal to complete the evacuation of fighters and civilians.

"The first stage is expected to move up to 500 rebels with their families to the countryside of Aleppo [province]".

The government has agreed "reconciliation" deals for several rebel-held areas, and touts such agreements that grant safe passage to surrendering fighters as key to ending six years of war.

Wall Street to open higher on Fed's 'gradual' rate-hike outlook
United States stocks closed higher on Wednesday, as oil prices bounced back and the Fed took a less hawkish stance than expected. Citizens of the Netherlands voted yesterday, Wednesday 15 March, and the outcome may have a huge impact on the exchange rate.

The opposition Homs Media Centre says up to 15,000 people could leave in the coming weeks, Reuters news agency reports.

"We are optimistic that the full exit of armed [fighters] from this district will pave the way for other reconciliations and settlements", he said.

And no aid has reached the area in at least four months, with a United Nations convoy that attempted to reach Waer in February seized by gunmen who diverted the assistance to a government-held area.

Although small-scale deals between the Syrian regime and rebel groups in the last two years have seen hundreds of local residents and gunmen leave the area - often in evacuation deals to Idlib province - al-Waer has faced a tight siege accompanied by intermittent bombardment since 2015.

Mount Etna Eruption Triggers 'Violent Explosion', 10 Injured
Sicily's Mount Etna has been quiet for two years, and this year drew skiers to its slopes, but it began to erupt again last month. A BBC crew and tourists were among those caught up in the drama as people were "pelted with boiling rocks and steam".

The al-Waer neighborhood is home to about 75,000 people and has been under a government siege since 2013, triggering shortages of medicine, and occasionally of food.

Rebel groups have been on the back foot in Syria, following Russia's intervention into the war on Assad's side, bringing its air power to bear in support of his army and its Iranian and Shiite militia allies.

United States officials said their planes struck an al-Qaeda gathering in northern Syria on Friday, killing dozens of militants.

The civil war, which entered its seventh year earlier this month, has killed more than 400,000 people and displaced more than half the country's population.
