Gearing up to start hearings in the probe of alleged Russian interference in the United States presidential election, the Senate Intelligence Committee leaders said they would look at "propaganda" and "fake news" stories that supposedly hurt Hillary Clinton.

But the continued controversy over Mr Nunes - and the decision by the top-ranking democrat on the committee Adam Schiff to ask him to stand down - has raised questions about whether the committee can continue with its work, with some suggesting the Senate Intelligence Committee should take a leading role. "I can assure you they didn't do it because it was in the best interest of the American people".

"If we see any attempt to stifle us with information or cut off the intelligence professionals giving us the access we need, you'll hear from us", he added.

"It would be safe to say we have had conversations with a lot of people, and it would be safe to say Gen Flynn is a part of that list", Burr said. All three are ongoing, but the USA intelligence community said weeks ago that Moscow had attempted to intercede in the election on Trump's behalf and that Russian President Vladimir Putin had direct knowledge of - and had perhaps even ordered - the effort.

As internal tensions deepened in Washington over the Russian investigations, the area around Capitol Hill was briefly put on high alert on Wednesday morning and one building put on lockdown after DC police confirmed that a woman tried to ram a police vehicle and run over several police officers with her auto.

China announced, and last week denied, plans to build on the highly strategic Scarborough Shoal near Manila and Subic Bay.

Mark Warner, the highest ranking Democrat on the committee, said of his Republican counterpart. ".Getting it right is more important than getting it done quickly".

A House Republican also argued Wednesday that responsibility for investigating the Russian interference is now in the hands of the Senate.

The senators stated Wednesday that Russian Federation is actively working to undermine or interfere with election campaigns underway in several countries outside the United States, including Germany, Montenegro, the Netherlands and France.

The White House has repeatedly pointed out that some who have seen the intelligence about this issue have said there is no evidence of coordination between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

"Tomorrow's hearing is with specifically that in mind, that we provide more public awareness, not just in this country but throughout the world, as to what Russia's up to", Burr said.

Ford recalls 440K vehicles for fire risk, door latch trouble
Under the recall, a spring in the side door latch could break, which could cause the door to open while the vehicle is in motion. Ford is issuing a safety compliance recall for approximately 111 2017 Ford Edge vehicles for missing windshield header welds.

Burr said committee senators and investigators have been working on their investigation since President Barack Obama presented his January 6 report on Russian political activities in the United States.

Committee chairman Devin Nunes responded "Why would I?" when asked Tuesday if he should recuse himself.

The Senate panel is holding its first public hearing on Thursday. Trump administration officials allegedly blocked her from appearing before the House committee.

The chairmen declined to say at this point whether President Trump was involved in any Russian activities - "We won't take a snapshot in time and make any observations on it", Burr said - but Warner gave a snapshot of Moscow's efforts during the election. Instead this meeting was cancelled, and at least one further meeting has been cancelled for this week.

"I don't think it does them any good", said Sen.
