Come look at intel material, White House tells House panel

Ex-Deputy AG Sally Yates Says Trump Tried to Limit Her Testimony on Russia

Two White House officials helped House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) acquire information that he says shows President Trump's transition team was incidentally surveilled, according to The New York Times.

The White House has granted the military broader authority to carry out strikes in Somalia against al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab militants, the Pentagon says, the latest sign Trump is increasing US military engagement in the region.

The Times identified Ezra Cohen-Watnick of the National Security Council and Michael Ellis, a national security lawyer with the White House Counsel's Office, as the two officials who played a role.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes went to House Speaker Paul Ryan before he visited President Donald Trump with his newly acquired information.

He previously served on Trump's transition team.

Committee chairman Devin Nunes responded "Why would I?" when asked Tuesday if he should recuse himself. Trump administration officials allegedly blocked her from appearing before the House committee.

A White House spokesperson declined to comment. Fending off growing criticism, the administration invited lawmakers from both parties to view classified material it said relates to surveillance of the president's associates. Cohen-Watnick had worked under Flynn at the Defense Intelligence Agency. But he raised concerns that the White House may have provided the information to his Republican counterpart first, and if so, why.

The White House refused to say on Thursday whether it secretly fed intelligence reports to a top Republican investigating possible coordination between Russian Federation and the 2016 Trump campaign.

Nunes has repeatedly insisted that the events of the past week were not part of a coordinated effort between himself and the White House.

This action was a clear breach of the separation of powers-congressional committees, like that chaired by Nunes, are supposed to exercise oversight of executive branch activities, not report to the executive branch in secret.

After his press conference, Nunes briefed President Trump on the findings without touching base with the rest of the House Intelligence Committee.

In his first year with the South Florida Bulls program, he spoke on the responsibility to represent the university appropriately. The case has been forwarded to the Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office to determine whether charges should be filed.

In Washington early last week, White House officials privately encouraged reporters to look into whether information about Trump associates had been improperly revealed in the intelligence gathering process.

He added that his "smell test" remark was based on Nunes's words at the time.

He said he wants to know why the materials appeared to be directed through Nunes if they originated at the White House.

Nunes has repeatedly sidestepped questions about who provided him the intelligence reports, though he pointedly has not denied that he sources were in the White House.

Comey said he would not testify without a formal invite, a spokesman for Nunes told CNN.
