Other members of the House Intelligence Committee have also called for Nunes to recuse himself from the investigation. Jeff Sessions, the Trump government's attorney general, first said he never met Kislyak during the campaign and then admitted to doing so. He reportedly took information related to Trump's unproven wiretapping claim to the White House without telling anyone on the committee.

Underscoring the fallout, a committee letter inviting Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey to testify was held up because Rep. Adam Schiff of California, the committee's senior Democrat, withheld his signature in hopes of forcing the committee's GOP leadership to hold an open hearing with former Obama officials.

Meanwhile, the Senate Intelligence Committee, which is conducting its own probe into the Russian meddling in last year's USA election, will meet in a closed session and its two leaders, Sen.

Democrats have called for Nunes to recuse himself from the investigation into Russian meddling in the presidential election, which includes probing the Trump campaign's ties to Russia, after the revelation that he visited the White House grounds the day before announcing he'd been shown evidence of incidental surveillance of President Trump's transition team.

At a press briefing Monday, reporters asked White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer if Nunes' source could have come from the White House itself.

Come look at intel material, White House tells House panel
He said he wants to know why the materials appeared to be directed through Nunes if they originated at the White House. Comey said he would not testify without a formal invite, a spokesman for Nunes told CNN.

At the center, of course, is Trump, who has animated the story with his off-the-cuff tweets.

The White House denied it had a hand in halting the hearing, saying it welcomed Yates' testimony. "We have no problem with her testifying, plain and simple", he said.

O'Neil declined to comment Tuesday, and a Justice Department spokeswoman did not return a message seeking comment.

Yates was sacked in January as acting attorney general after she refused to defend the Trump administration's first travel ban. He fired his national security adviser, Michael Flynn, last month for misrepresenting meetings with the Russian ambassador. Flynn was ousted after those discrepancies were made public.

In his remarks Tuesday, Nunes seemed confused as to why he wouldn't continue to run the House's investigation as the committee's chairman.

Schumer called for House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin) to replace Nunes on the committee in order to have "a credible investigation".

The White House said Thursday it was inviting the top-ranking lawmakers on the House and Senate intelligence committees to view materials it said had been uncovered in the course of looking into President Donald Trump's claims he'd been surveilled by the Obama administration.

"It's the same thing as always around this place - a lot of politics, people get heated, but I'm not going to involve myself with that", he said.
