PIERRE, S.D. - (Governor's Office) - The White House has issued a proclamation to honor the life of John Glenn on Thursday, April 6, 2017, the day of his interment.

John Glenn, the legendary NASA astronaut and OH senator, will have an internment service Thursday morning at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.

Glenn died on December 8, and a public viewing was held at the Ohio Statehouse before a public memorial service. Glenn was born in Cambridge and grew up in New Concord.

In Glenn's honor, flags of federal entities and institutions will fly at half-staff, per President Donald Trump's order.

The U.S. Marine Corps will live stream his service, starting around 9:20 a.m. Streaming video also will be available on NASA TV.

Glenn's widow, Annie, is 97. He Also served many years as a USA senator.

When NASA's Manned Space Program began in 1958, Glenn was selected as one of the original seven astronauts to participate in Project Mercury. Glenn, as a US senator at age 77, also became the oldest person in space by orbiting Earth with six astronauts aboard shuttle Discovery in 1998. He returned at age 77 on shuttle mission STS-95, performing research meant to learn more about how a senior's body responds to spaceflight.

"Senator Glenn was more than an astronaut", acting NASA administrator Robert Lightfoot said in a statement Thursday.
