Burger King's latest ad prompts your Google Home to deliver Whopper facts

Burger King

In March, Google Home irritated people when, unprompted, it alerted them to the opening of "Beauty and the Beast".

The hamburger chain unveiled a 15-second ad Wednesday created to trigger Google Home devices into reciting the definition of a Whopper, pulled from the website Wikipedia.

The 15-second ad starts with a Burger King employee holding up the sandwich saying, "You're watching a 15-second Burger King ad, which is unfortunately not enough time to explain all the fresh ingredients in the Whopper sandwich". In this case, it was Burger King's chance to tell the tale of its flame-broiled Whopper.

Russian Federation metro explosion: One suspect in St. Petersburg subway blast identified
Russian investigators found DNA that identified the suicide bomber as a 22-year-old Kyrgyz Russian citizen, Akbarzhon Dzhalilov. The statement did not disclose whether Dzhalilov had accomplices or connections to the Islamic State or other terrorist groups.

That phrasing prompts devices featuring Google's Assistant to wake up, and search the internet for information about the Whopper. It's a clever way of getting viewers' attention, but it's also a really quick way of getting on viewers' nerves - just look at the reactions people had when ads accidentallytriggered voice assistants in the past.

The spot will run nationally during primetime starting Wednesday on networks like Adult Swim, History, Spike, Comedy Central, MTV, E!, Bravo and also on Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon in New York, Miami, and Los Angeles.

The there was this Pixel commercial, where a Pixel user says "Ok Google, show me Korean restaurants in Boulder".

Former Fox anchor: Harassment is pervasive
On Tuesday, multiple advocacy groups started social media campaigns targeting companies sponsoring "The O'Reilly Factor ". O'Reilly has denied wrongdoing and said he supported the settlements so his family wouldn't be hurt.

"The above reads as obvious ad-copy", a note in the page's edit discussions section reads in reference to Burger King's proposed changes.

Contrary to reports claiming Google has disabled the functionality, we were just able to summon the Assistant by playing the ad. Shortly after Burger King launched the ad, Google Home stopped responding to the commercial.

And this Google Home commercial that aired during the Super Bowl and caused some Home devices to go on the fritz because the phrase "Ok Google." is said so many times.

Hull beats Middlesbrough 4-2, out of EPL relegation zone
Only the reflexes of Jakupovic prevented Boro from quickly halving the deficit as he tipped Rudy Gestede's far-post header onto the crossbar.

It's not often that mentions of Burger King appear on websites dedicated to technology and gadgetry, but Burger King has forced its way in nonetheless. Should companies try to break through your TV to continue their advertising via your connect devices?
