Google agrees to pay Italy €306 million in taxes

Google has agreed to pay a near-record fine of over 306 million Euros (334 million dollars) to settle a tax controversy in Italy, officials said on Thursday.

The tax agency said Google also agreed to sign an agreement ensuring "the future correct taxation in Italy" of company activities related to the country.

"The settlement with Google's Italian and Irish subsidiaries covers the 2002 to 2006 and 2009 to 2015 periods".

The move follows a separate agreement with the tax authorities in the United Kingdom, where Google agreed past year to pay £106m in back taxes.

Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Google confirmed on Thursday that it would pay its back taxes in Italy, including what it paid during 13 years of operations through 2015, the New York Times reported.

Google was under investigation by the Guardia di Finanza (tax police) and the prosecutor for booking profits generated in the country in Ireland.
