Fox News personality Kimberly Guilfoyle says she's in talks to join the White House as press secretary, according to The Mercury News. Guilfoyle now co-hosts "The Five" on Fox News and was supposedly a top candidate for the job after Donald Trump's election but lost out to Spicer.

SPICER: I think - I said - I was very clear that the president would have nothing further on that last week.

"I think I have a very good relationship with the president", she told the Bay Area News Group.

"She was originally considered for press secretary during the presidential transition, but the job went to Sean Spicer, the former spokesman for the Republican National Committee", the NorCal news outlet writes.

Hallie Jackson of MSNBC asked Spicer that if he refuses to neither "confirm nor deny" if Trump has tapes of conversations he had with Comey, how any official would feel comfortable speaking privately with the president in the White House. "I wish him the best, and I know he puts a lot of effort into it".

The network said in a statement that Guilfoyle "is a valued member of the FOX News primetime lineup, and is under a long-term contract with the network".

If Guilfoyle takes the job, she would leave her current gig as a co-host of Fox News' "The Five".

Mr Spicer was replaced by Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders last week - a massively critical week which saw the White House subject to heavy scrutiny over the sacking of Mr Comey.

The president said the change, if implemented, could happen "over the next couple of weeks". The Washington Post reported that Spicer "huddled with his staff near a clump of bushes and then behind a tall hedge" on the White House grounds to avoid reporters.

In the wide-ranging interview, the President also defended the timing of his firing of FBI Director James Comey earlier this week, saying, "There's really no right time to do it". "At the same time, life is exciting and it's about different chapters in your life, so I'm excited about the future".
