This incident comes just days before Britain's general election on June 8, and less than two weeks after a suicide bombing in Manchester killed 22 people, including children, and injured more than 100.

A white van was said to be traveling at about 50 miles per hour when it veered off the road and on to the sidewalk on the bridge late Saturday night and struck pedestrians, less than a month after the Manchester Arena was bombed.

He added that "it did not look like an accident", saying it was clear that police "thought they were responding to something far more serious than a road traffic accident".

News reports that London Bridge has been closed as armed police gather.

Other estimates say as many as 20 people may have been injured in the incident.

London Bridge was closed in both directions, British Transport Police said. "Armed officers responded and shots have been fired", one tweet said.

Shortly after that, officers said there had been reports of stabbings at Borough Market.
