Rosenstein told a Senate appropriations subcommittee that Mueller reports to him and that he could only fire the special counsel for reasons set out in the special counsel regulation, including "good cause".

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein affirmed his support for Russian Federation special counsel Robert Mueller on Tuesday, despite recent suggestions that President Trump was weighing Mueller's dismissal. So that is what I would do.

"I think it was a good choice", McConnell, a Republican, told the Hill of the choice to appoint Mueller to oversee the FBI's growing probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and possible ties to some of Trump's campaign staff members.

"We also were aware of facts that I can't discuss in an open setting that would make his continued engagement in a Russia-related investigation problematic", Comey said.

The talk about dismissing Mueller appeared to be coming from Trump allies - including some close to White House strategist Steve Bannon - who are increasingly frustrated with the prospect of a long and winding probe.

On CNN to anchor Chris Cuomo: "I think it is a consideration the president has had, because Mueller is illegitimate as special counsel".

Comey himself said when he testified before the Senate last week that he was "sure" that Mueller's investigation would look into a potential obstruction of justice case against President Donald Trump.

The Newsmax head also slammed the White House communications team's response to his statement, calling it "amateur hour".

Rosenstein took over the investigation when Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from any dealings with the Russia probe on March 2 after his own dealings with Russian officials was disclosed.

"Director Mueller is going to have the full degree of independence that he needs to conduct that investigation appropriately", Rosenstein said. And the Daily Caller reported on Tuesday that included an interview with Mueller.

Nadal dominates to win historic 10th French Open title
The Spaniard, now a 15-time Grand Slam victor , eased to victory in the French capital to the delight of those in attendance. Wawrinka , the oldest French Open finalist since 1973, shouldn't exactly have been a walkover either.

As he has already said earlier in the day, Rosenstein is not involved in the investigation and does not know any details regarding what's going on.

Spicer, the spokesman, declined to say then that Sessions enjoyed Trump's confidence, though spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said later in the week that the president had confidence "in all of his Cabinet".

Ruddy argued that Mueller should not have taken the job of special counsel because he was under consideration for the other position, and had had the private meeting with the president for the Federal Bureau of Investigation director appointment.

Rosenstein was likely referring to the possibility that Mueller would investigate whether Sessions violated his recusal or whether Comey's firing might have been an effort to obstruct justice.

Ruddy told ABC News that he stands by his comments that the president is considering asking Rosenstein to terminate Mueller. Whether or not public confidence would be restored would depend on the reactions of DOJ officials and Republicans in Congress, whose moves can not necessarily be anticipated.
