Russia says Trump is using 'Cold War rhetoric' on Cuba

In practice, however, many recent changes to boost ties to Cuba will stay as they are.

The new realities of U.S.travel to Cuba will be determined by the regulations that federal agencies will produce as a result of the new policy.

Trump is reportedly considering restrictions on Americans traveling to Cuba and on transactions by USA companies with entities connected to the Cuban military, which controls more than half of the country's economy. One would think that Trump, who trumpets his business background, would understand that open relations with Cuba - trade, travel, human and cultural exchange - will have far more impact in generating pressure for change than a reversion to the failed embargo. "But the law is there and we can not encourage people to violate that law". But it makes some exceptions, including for air and sea travel, according to United States officials.

Seven U.S. airlines now fly nonstop to Cuba, following an intense effort to win a direct flight route to the island past year. A former Cuban soldier who arrived in the U.S.by boat in 1959, he said that that Trump measures were the right ones to take.

The change could have sweeping implications for US companies, but it is not clear how it will affect existing deals, such as the one struck by Starwood Hotels and Resorts previous year to manage hotels in Cuba, including one owned by the military conglomerate Gaviota.

"We will not be silent in the face of communist oppression any longer", Trump said.

Trump has spent more weekends away from Washington than not.

Turkey's Tayyip Erdogan says Saudi king should resolve Gulf rift during Ramadan
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, on a Gulf tour trying to help broker an end to the crisis, defended the deal. Qatar, for its part, has denied the accusations, calling the moves to diplomatically isolate it "unjustified".

Nor are there plans to reinstate limits that Obama lifted on the amount of the island's coveted rum and cigars that Americans can bring home for personal use.

What remains in place from Obama's policy? He has already pulled the United States out of a major global climate treaty and is trying to scrap his predecessor's landmark healthcare program.

This is a message that has some support, even among those in the once monolithic Cuban community who had begun to doubt the embargo and cautiously welcomed Obama's efforts to mend the half-century-old divide. When Obama made the agreement and restored relations with the Cuban government, he gave them everything they asked for.

Castro's government has clearly stated it does not intend to change its one-party political system. "We will not lift sanctions on the Cuban regime until all political prisoners are free". "They will not achieve their objective of debilitating the Revolution or submitting the Cuban people, whose resistance to the aggressions of any kind and origin has been proven throughout six decades".

Just over one year ago, Obama took the stage at a theater in Havana, with Castro in attendance, to reject that thinking and declare that he meant to "bury the last vestige of the Cold War" and "leave behind the ideological battles of the past".

"Our policy will seek a much better deal for the Cuban people and for the United States of America".

And any new government can not include Raúl Castro or Fidel Castro, now a moot point.

"I agree with Trump on the military".

The U.S. severed ties with Cuba in 1961 after Fidel Castro's revolution, and spent decades trying to either overthrow the government or isolate the island, including by toughening an economic embargo first imposed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Still, Trump's action allowed him to claim credit for taking a tough stand while leaving in place numerous changes made by Obama, which polls have shown are broadly supported, including by most Republicans.

"His speech was aggressive and threatening, . revealing his contempt and ignorance" the President of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro said. Last week, a group of House Republicans sent a letter to Trump opposing "reversing course" on Cuba. "It is an offence against Latin America".

American citizens will still be able to take commercial flights to Cuba, but once again only for 12 specific reasons - ranging from journalism to educational activities.

"We will assume any risk and remain firm and secure in building a sovereign, independent, socialist, democratic, prosperous and sustainable nation", Castro said in a statement. But the Republican leadership in Congress has long blocked such a move, and it appears unlikely to budge.

Speaking from Miami, Florida, Trump announced changes to President Obama's historic rapprochement with Cuba - fulfilling a promise to the anti-Castro voting bloc he believes helped his campaign clinch the state, but stirring fear among others he could set back business interests and Cuba's potential for a more prosperous private sector.
