Turkey returns fire on Kurdish YPG in northern Syria

Hurriyet reported on Wednesday that the Turkey army said YPG machine-gun fire on Tuesday evening targeted FSA elements in the Maranaz area south of the town of Azaz in northern Syria. "If this sparks a threat to our borders, we will react as we did with Operation Euphrates Shield".

Turkish forces have retaliated with artillery fire overnight and destroyed Kurdish rebel targets in Syria after YPG fighters opened fire on Turkey-backed rebels in Syria's north, the military said.

The YPG are the main component of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) supported by the U.S. in Syria.

Whether a small number of US troops is enough to deter Turkish forces from entering Tal Abyad and the surrounding region remains to be seen, but so far efforts to quell Turkey's fears through diplomatic means have proved futile.

United Arab Emirates: Qatar Faces Fresh Sanctions, 'Permanent Isolation'
Saudi Arabia and other Sunni Arab countries have been complaining about these Qatari activities for the past five years. The Qatari foreign minister however issued a statement on Tuesday and said the demands were "unreasonable" and "false".

On a different note, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey could launch a new cross-border operation in northern Syria.

Turkey has massed troops on the Syrian border, as clashes with Kurdish militias broke out on Tuesday night sparking fears of wider skirmishes between the two groups.

The city of Tal Abyad is strategic to Turkey and the Kurds, one YPG volunteer told Military Times.

Turkish officials hailed the almost seven-month campaign as a success after Turkish-backed Syrian rebels aided by the Turkish military took control of a stretch of territory extending to the town of al-Bab. It said the development was a part of "continued preparations" by the Turkish forces and their Syrian allies "to carry out a wide-scale military operation against the Syria Democratic Forces".

Mattis said the us gave the fighters weapons they needed for the urban fighting they are facing in Raqqa.

Asked earlier this week if the USA -led coalition was aware of the Turkish build-up, a spokesman, Colonel Ryan Dillon, confirmed that American units had "seen some movement" on the border, but declined further comment.

Meanwhile, Mattis met with his Turkish counterpart Fikri Isik in Brussels on Wednesday to discuss developments in Syria, in particular the United States cooperation with Kurdish militias, and guarantees submitted by Washington of disarming the YPG following the liberation of Raqqa.
