Rocket has been tested and assembled since arriving at the launch center in May

This is the second launch of the Long March-5 following its successful maiden mission in September previous year.

China's ambitious space programme suffered a rare setback on Sunday as its new heavy-lift carrier rocket, the Long March-5 Y2 failed to put the country's largest satellite into orbit.

China will launch its second powerful heavy- lift rocket into space on Sunday, July 2. An upper stage attached to the satellite was later able to correct the orbit. The satellite might operate there up to 15 years in case of a successful launch, Sputnik reported. The launch, broadcast live by Chinese media, appeared to go as planned, but those broadcasts ended prior to any announcement of separation of the rocket's payload, the Shijian-18 communications satellite.

The Long March 5B, if the schedule holds, could to see one or two test launches in 2018, possibly carrying a test capsule for a 20 metric tonne, next-generation spacecraft for human missions.
