In a joint statement, four states - Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain - voiced their collective "regret" over Qatar's apparent refusal to meet their demands, including calls to close Doha-based pan-Arab broadcaster Al Jazeera.

That deadline was extended by 48 hours on Sunday, when Qatar responded to their demands.

Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammad bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said earlier that Qatar had responded to the list of demands "in keeping with the principle of national sovereignty and global law".

Host of the meeting, Sameh Shoukry noted that Qatar's response was "not serious" and betrayed Qatar's "failure" to realize the gravity of the situation.

Trying to find reasons behind Qatar's royal family's support to terrorism, an article published in the New Republic explained that it is just a continuation of a bad decision made by former Qatari ruler and the incumbent emir's father, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, and his foreign minister and prime minister, Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber al Thani.

Qatar Airways said in a statement early on Thursday the ban had been lifted after the airline and its hub airport Hamad International met with all new U.S. security requirements.

The conditions include severing ties with the Muslim Brotherhood, scaling back relations with Iran, Saudi Arabia's rival for regional hegemony; shutting the government-funded Al Jazeera television station, which has been critical of other autocratic governments in the region; and end Turkey's military presence in Qatar.

Qatari officials have repeatedly said the demands are so draconian that they suspect the four countries never seriously meant to negotiate them, and were instead seeing to hobble Doha's sovereignty.

A crisis in the Persian Gulf showed no sign of abating Wednesday, after four Arab states announced they will continue - and perhaps escalate - their isolation of neighboring Qatar, which they accuse of supporting terrorism. "But the Gulf countries consider the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist group, the United States has not labeled the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist group thus far".

The foreign affairs think tank called for a public inquiry into the role of Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations.

Meanwhile, Emirati Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan kept up the pressure on Qatar. Analysts said the involvement of third parties to audit Qatar could provide a template for addressing the core concerns of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt.

Existing sanctions, including a land and air blockade, would remain in place, the statement said.

The Saudi-led group announced no new sanctions but indicated that Qatar could be expelled from the Gulf Cooperation Council.

According to the White House, the US President "reiterated the need for all countries to follow through on their commitments at the Riyadh summit to stop terrorist financing and discredit extremist ideology".
