Wimbledon Victoria Azarenka fights past British wild card Heather Watson in the third round

If Konta notched up a record, becoming the first British woman to reach a Wimbledon singles semifinal since Virginia Wade in 1978, Halep missed an achievement - winning the match would have made her World No. 1.

Despite questions to try and stir up the pot about that Fed Cup play-off tie, batted away by both players, it was a day to let their tennis do the talking.

Serving up the only tennis show in town as the rain drummed down outside the roofed-in Centre Court and avoiding eye contact at changeovers, the pair also had the extra weight of history to contend with. It was absolutely a stunning performance really and the pressure was relentless that Konta kept applying - it was brilliant, she never really wavered one little bit.

Second seed Simona Halep might find out soon too.

The former number 1, bidding to clinch her 29th top 5 win, the first since 2016 Miami, barely avoided the bagel before saving a match point and breaking to 2-5 with a clean volley, her 20th victor of the match. Halep is still healing her wounds from defeat in the French Open final. She missed the second half of last season after wrist and knee operations, and her ranking fell out of the top 400.

Much like Konta's epic match with Vekic, by the third set the two players were exhausted and the set looked to be going entirely with serve.

Konta refuses to use that as motivation even though Halep and her team were not overly sympathetic.

More break points came and went for the Brit, who missed two real chances when at 15-40 at 4-3 when netting slow Halep serves and the second seed hung on.

After repeated questioning over her father's hand signals during the match, Garcia snapped: "Oh, my gosh".

"It's been something that I've been dragging back and forth for a while now", Djokovic said about his shoulder. "Always when I play in my home country, is the same".

"She's definitely playing with confidence in the Slams".

Clearly laying down her bid for an appearance in any future celebrity version of Great British Bake Off, Konta said: "If I've got time, it will be a chocolate chip and banana muffin".

"She says, 'I love my job!' and she means it". "I think we experienced it a couple of times in the match". I felt consistent in my approach and just continued to trust in myself. He wanted me to coach him. "Honestly, I definitely can not complain with the amount of support and general good feelings coming my way".

Williams' quarter-final opponent, Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko, was just 11 when Venus won the last of her five Wimbledon titles in 2008.

"I'm sure she's confident and determined".

She once joked that she would remortgage her house to see U2 and plans to see the band once Wimbledon is over. But she seems to be handling it well. However, the 20-year-old Latvian won the girls' title at Wimbledon in 2014.

"It was a tremendous match, played at a very high level".

World number one Murray will face Sam Querrey, who he leads 7-1 in career meetings, for a place in the semi-finals. Just over a year has passed since his surprise exit at the third-round stage to Sam Querrey. But who is the star of British women's tennis? "I'm not playing against a crowd and I'm not playing against a past experience", said Konta. I'm looking forward to playing against Simona.

"I've been a part of some great moments and exciting moments in other events, as well".

Konta and Williams will play their semi-final on Thursday.
