Iceberg the size of DE, among biggest ever recorded, snaps off Antarctica

Iceberg of the doubled sized Luxembourg breaks off the ice shelf of Antarctica

The iceberg weighs an estimated 1.12 trillion tons and is approximately the size of Delaware.

A trillion-tonne iceberg, one of the biggest on record, has snapped off the West Antarctic ice shelf, according to scientists who have monitored the growing crack for months.

As for any danger to navigation, scientists said the iceberg will probably break up and its pieces will circle Antarctica for years or decades rather than drifting northward into shipping lanes. If the entire ice shelf breaks apart, that grounded ice could flow into the ocean, changing sea levels, Hogg says.

The British Antarctic Survey contends that man-driven changes in the world's climate is causing the rapid thinning of most of the polar ice.

Johanna Konta books spot in Wimbledon semi-finals
World number one Murray will face Sam Querrey , who he leads 7-1 in career meetings, for a place in the semi-finals. She missed the second half of last season after wrist and knee operations, and her ranking fell out of the top 400.

The Larsen C section of the iceberg of the Larsen ice shelf of the continent had reduced in size after the iceberg broke off.

The iceberg was already floating before it broke away, so there won't be an impact on water levels, Schoof said.

Adrian Luckman, a professor of glaciology at Swansea University and head of the Midas Project, said that there is a chance that the Larcen C ice shelf will continue to shed, or it could actually regrow.

The iceberg is about 2,200 square miles and is 1,100 feet thick, with a volume double the amount of Lake Erie. Also, the ice shelf serves as a barrier to the land-based glacier that feeds the ice shelf; as that barrier diminishes, there's more of a chance for the ice behind it to collapse into the sea, MIDAS researchers said. He stressed that ice shelves naturally break up as they extend further out into the ocean and this is not the first massive iceberg that formed.

Explosion reported at Air Force recruiting center in Oklahoma
Last night at approximately 10:30 pm local time, there was an explosion at an Air Force recruiting office in Bixby, Oklahoma. The individual or individuals involved in the incident vandalized the building and slashed tires of vehicles at the center.

While it does seem unusual, Schoof explained big icebergs have broken off Antarctica in the past, and it's part of a natural process.

The broken-off berg makes up around 12 percent of the area of Larsen C. Its loss is likely to speed up the destruction of the main ice shelf, until it disappears - like Larsen A and B before it.

Scientists said that NASA detected the final rift via satellite imagery.

On Wednesday, a USA satellite observed that an existing crack in the Larsen C Ice Shelf appears to have broken through. We're going to be watching very carefully for signs that the rest of the shelf is becoming unstable'.
