Two Ukrainians are known to be among the victims, three from Serbia and one from Poland.

The attacker - reportedly in his 20s - was reported to have stabbed the tourists in the face, neck and feet, according to a security official.

The ministry said the assailant was arrested immediately after the attack, which took place on Friday.

"The incident resulted in the injury of six female tourists of different nationalities who were transferred to a hospital for treatment", the Interior Ministry statement read.

Initial reports said those killed on Friday were Ukrainian, but the Reuters news agency subsequently said they were Germans.

Security has been tightened in tourist resorts around the country as the industry is a major revenue stream for Egypt.

A motive for the attack has yet to be made clear, as details are still emerging.

Hours earlier five police were shot dead in the city of Giza by suspected Islamic militants. It happened at the beach of a hotel with the attacker gaining access to the tourists by swimming from a public area.

The shadowy group Hasm, believed to be affiliated to the banned Muslim Brotherhood, has claimed responsibility for similar attacks.
