Martin Landau, Oscar Winner for 'Ed Wood,' Dies at 89

Martin Landau, the Oscar-winning actor of Ed Wood and the star of the 1960s TV series Mission: Impossible has died at the age of 89.

"We are overcome with sadness to report the death of iconic actor Martin Landau on July 15th, 2017 at 1:30pm at UCLA Medical Center, where he succumbed to unexpected complications during a short hospitalization".

Celebrities influenced by Landau's many decades of work - his first notable role was in Alfred Hitchcock's 1959 film North by Northwest and he has been acting ever since - reacted to the news, remembering his talent and kindness.

Beyond the singer's footwear, a major highlight of the evening was the moment Harry met Harry (aka Prince Harry ). Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in.

He was nominated for Emmys for each of his three seasons on the show and won the Golden Globe for best male TV star in 1968. Landau would go on to receive a best supporting actor nomination for his performance. "But this fuckin' town shat on him", Landau told Entertainment Weekly in 1994.

Landau had proposed making Leonard covertly gay and worked with screenwriter Ernest Lehman to craft a line about his "woman's intuition" - to be delivered before the character demonstrates how Mason's girlfriend (played by Eva Marie Saint) has betrayed them. Years later, he taught at the group's second location, in West Hollywood, CA, the Actors Studio West. He had the goods: Landau was the other guy accepted to Lee Strasberg's legendary Actor's Studio alongside Steve McQueen in 1955; it was there that he met his future wife and co-star, Barbara Bain. "People thought I was nuts to play the character gay, which wasn't originally written that way".

Landau was also an acclaimed acting coach, teaching the likes of Jack Nicholson.

After all, Landau's roller-coaster career included credits like The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island. (He was also nominated three times for "Mission: Impossible", although he never won an Emmy.) In 2015 he appeared in the "Entourage" movie.

Landau is survived by daughters Susan Landau Finch (a casting director and producer whose upcoming projects include Nate and Al, with her father tapped to play Al) and Juliet Landau (a ballerina and actress best known for playing Drusilla on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spin-off Angel).

He and Bain divorced, and Landau spent the '80s in roles in mostly obscure films. Martin Landau, I was just telling a story about working with you tonight at dinner!

The 6-foot-10 Isner had quite a height advantage over the 5-9 Sela, but that didn't help on this day. The only time he had made it past the second round until now was a fourth-round showing in 2009.
