Israel reopens Jerusalem's Noble Sanctuary after deadly shooting

Israel's relatively unusual decision to lock down the compound in the immediate aftermath of the attack, and its subsequent introduction of more stringent security measures at the site sparked outrage among Palestinians, who suggested that Israel might use the attack to justify changing the status-quo at the site which allows Muslim prayer there but forbids Jewish prayer and religious rituals.

Dozens of Palestinians have been injured in clashes with Israeli police as a confrontation over one of Jerusalem's holiest sites drags into its fifth day.

The Palestinian Fatah party, led by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, called for a "Day of Rage" on Wednesday to protest new Israeli security measures at the contested Jerusalem holy site after a deadly shooting attack that killed two policemen last week.

It was for the first time in the past 50 years that Israel closed the compound, which is Islam's third holiest site.

Israeli soldiers abducted, overnight and at dawn Tuesday, six young Palestinian men in several areas of occupied East Jerusalem, and moved them to detention and interrogation centers in the city.

Democrats rejected the suggestion as another tactic by Republicans supporting White House objections to the bill. There's also another issue lingering over the bill in the House that could lead to changes to the measure.

Police said that despite the tensions, hundreds of worshippers had entered the compound.

Meanwhile, two rights groups protested against the closure of the Old City and its vicinity in Jerusalem al-Quds and the ban on Palestinians from entering it.

The Jerusalem police commissioner Yoram Halevy said the metal detectors were necessary for the site to reopen.

On Saturday, Netanyahu's spokesperson for Arab Media said the site would reopen on Sunday for worshipers, visitors and tourists. 'I assume that with time they will understand that this is not bad, ' he told Army Radio. He said that security measures of this kind are commonplace in the world.

He added: 'When I go shopping on Friday I pass through a detector at the mall.

Ashraf al-Qedra, a spokesman for the Palestinian Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip, said two of the fishermen sustained moderate injuries, identifying them as Ibrahim al-Jahjoh and Khedr Abu-Shamaleh.

During that period, Israeli forces have killed more than 254 Palestinians, majority said by Israel to be attackers while others were killed in clashes with Israeli forces.

This frequently creates tensions with Muslim worshippers who fear Israel will seek to change rules governing the compound now administered by Jordan in coordination with the Palestinians.

Forty Israelis, two USA tourists and a British student have been killed in Palestinian stabbings, shootings and car-rammings.
