The Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), a US watchdog, estimates that the Taliban controls 11 districts and has influence over 34 of Afghanistan's 407 districts (11 percent), while the Afghan government controls 97 districts and influences 146 (60 percent).

The Taliban launched four assaults on Ghor's Taywara police headquarters and "we had no choice but to retreat", provincial police chief Mohammad Mustafa Moseni said.

The reasons why these villagers have been referred to are unknown, but this type of operation target, in general, the officials of the Kabul government and the security forces.

Ghulam Naser Khazeh, the governor of Ghor, told Anadolu Agency that Taywara fell when hundreds of insurgents attacked the district from various directions on Saturday night, but gave no casualty figures.

After capturing Taywara district Taliban fighters stalked the corridors of the only hospital looking for wounded Afghan National Security personnel to kill, said provincial public health department director Ghulam Nabi Yaghana. It's believed all the dead are military or police personnel, he said.

Highways passing through insurgency-prone areas have become exceedingly risky, with the Taliban and other armed groups frequently kidnapping or killing travellers.

Their bodies were found the next day. "We've always felt like we are going to solve this", he added. The man can be heard in the brief audio clip saying what police believe to be "down the hill".

The security forces are fighting with insurgents in Ghormatch, Qaisar, Almar, Belcheragh, Khwaja Sabzposh, Dawlat Abad Sherin Tagab and Kohistan districts of the province.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks, nor is it known whether any ransom demands have been made. It wasn't immediately clear if they had been kidnapped or had escaped. The Associated Press could not independently verify either death toll.

Elsewhere in the country, the Taliban on Sunday captured a district in the northern province of Faryab after an overnight attack that triggered hours of heavy fighting, said provincial police spokesman Abdul Karim Yourish.

Initial reports said those killed on Friday were Ukrainian, but the Reuters news agency subsequently said they were Germans. Security has been tightened in tourist resorts around the country as the industry is a major revenue stream for Egypt .

The Taliban have launched dozens of attacks in northern Afghanistan in recent days, temporarily closing a major highway between the region and the capital, Kabul.
