On Sunday, Maduro released a remix of "Despacito" with lyrics that promoted his goal to change the country's constitution, with what seems to be an eye to change law to extend his own term. The government has downplayed the referendum and has continued its plans for the constituent assembly.

The stars behind the worldwide smash Latin pop hit Despacito have slammed Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro for using the song for his political benefits. "My music is for all of those that want to listen to it and enjoy it, not to use it as propaganda that tries to manipulate the will of the people that are crying out for their freedom and a better future".

Daddy Yankee took to Instagram to post a screenshot of headlines about Maduro's use of the song, which he crossed out in red. "Illegally appropriating a song ['Despacito'] doesn't compare with the crimes you commit and have committed in Venezuela".

Moscow has denied any interference, and Trump says his campaign did not collude with Russian Federation . The president also has denied knowing about the meeting until recently.

"Your dictatorial regime is a joke, not only for my Venezuelan brothers, but for the entire world". Instead of describing a slow (despacio) seduction technique, the chorus now urges Venezuelans to vote for the body.

"Des-paaaa-ci-to, cast your ballot instead of bullets, go with your ideas always in peace and calm, and may hope shine in your soul", sang the chorus.

Maduro has also applauded the creative group, who reworked on the song and asked the audience what they thought about it, the BBC reported.

"What can you expect?" he wrote, "Of a person who has stolen so many lives from young dreamers".

Venezuela has been shaken by often violent protests in recent months, and millions joined a general strike last week.

Rewriting the constitutional is immensely unpopular in Venezuela, where the pollster Datanalisis found that 85 percent of people oppose the move, and many believe it's a power grab by Maduro ahead of next year's presidential elections.

Critics say he is trying to cement a dictatorship.
