Russian Federation to seize U.S. properties in retaliation over sanctions

Russia's foreign ministry on Friday announced counter measures in response to tough new sanctions proposed by the United States, ordering Washington to reduce its diplomatic staff.

Russian Federation took the step after the US Senate on Thursday sent a breath-taking signal that it does not trust Trump on Russian Federation by passing a bill that imposes new sanctions on Moscow and ties the president's hands if he seeks to ease them.

Russia's response mirrors moves by outgoing President Barack Obama last December to expel 35 Russian diplomats and shut down two Russian estates in the U.S.

Republicans and Democrats have pushed for more sanctions partly as a response to conclusions by US intelligence agencies that the Kremlin interfered in the election. The proposed legal act requires the US government should go ahead with resistance to the laying of this pipeline. But vote tallies in the House and Senate - 419-3 and 98-2, respectively - meant that a Trump veto would have likely been overridden.

Venezuela has been shaken by often violent protests in recent months, and millions joined a general strike last week. The government has downplayed the referendum and has continued its plans for the constituent assembly.

Republican Sen. John McCain, a leading congressional voice calling for a firm line against Russian Federation, said before the vote: "The United States of America needs to send a strong message to Vladimir Putin and any other aggressor that we will not tolerate attacks on our democracy".

The new sanctions come as the White House grapples with several ongoing probes into ties between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation, which the President has blasted as unnecessary.

The sanctions were drawn up in part to punish Russian Federation further over the annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.

According to the statement, the Russian minister noted that Moscow's "limited and absolutely adequate measures" with respect to U.S. diplomatic property in Russia "is not a response on the basis of an "eye for an eye principle", but a forced step that fits perfectly into worldwide practice and is aimed at protecting legitimate Russian interests".

The European Union has also expressed concern about the new sanctions, saying they could have an impact on the European energy sector.

"Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking ahead of the Senate vote, accused US lawmakers of 'insolence' and promised retaliation if the sanctions become law", as NPR's Scott Neuman reported Thursday. -European standoff, of course, it was the Congress who is the troublemaker, not Donald Trump.

The sanctions package imposes mandatory penalties on people involved in Iran's ballistic missile program and anyone who does business with them. Bob Corker, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told reporters: "I would guess that he (Trump) will sign it". The measure would apply terrorism sanctions to the country's Revolutionary Guards and enforce an arms embargo.

Signing a bill that penalises Russia's election interference marks a significant shift for Trump. "(The Russians) have taken Trump's measure and while they are willing to exploit his goofy fixation on Putin and naive sense you can do deals with someone like Putin ... they realize his clownish performance as president makes it really hard for him to deliver on any of the big things that Russia wants", said Andrew Weiss, a former national security council Russia expert.
