United States set for 'great' eclipse

Putnam Carpenter eclipse

The first solar eclipse to cross the entire United States in 99 years will be close enough to get a glimpse from UNF on August 21.

Dr. Peggy Hill, professor of physics, and Taylor Shivelbine, senior physics education major at Southeast Missouri State University, will give an upcoming community talk at the Bollinger County Museum of Natural History in Marble Hill, Missouri, to prepare residents for the total solar eclipse occurring on august 21.

When a total solar eclipse occurs, the moon passes between the sun and the earth and seems to completely cover the sun. If you can only take one look, then try to time it for the period when the eclipse is at a maximum so you'll see the largest fraction of the sun covered by the moon.

You might already know that if you want to view the solar eclipse in person, it's vital that you purchase special solar eclipse glasses that will protect your eyes from the sun's harmful rays. Prior to this year's event, the most recent total solar eclipse to pass over the continental United States was in 1979. Just to the north and east, in parts of Wyoming and Nebraska, viewers will experience the "totality" - a full solar eclipse.

Read on for more details and have a go at our eclipse quiz at the bottom of this page. NASA estimates 500 million people will be able to see it, in partial or in total form. Roads will be clogged and travel times will be much more than a usual weekend.

In Sabetha, the totality will begin at 1:04 p.m. and end at 1:07 p.m. Don't look at the sun through binoculars, telescopes or your camera's viewfinder.

Never look directly at the sun.

How do you watch the eclipse? The Moon blocks the light from the sun and for a few minutes and the temperature drops as if it's night for a few minutes.

Perisic helps Inter beat Chelsea
Inter sub Joao Mario should have made it 3-0 from Perisic's unselfish pass, but his low effort was saved by the boot of Courtois. Chelsea's next game is the Community Shield against London rivals Arsenal at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, August 6.

It's been four decades since we've seen a solar eclipse in L.A.

.

Inside the Tellus theater, you can watch a live video of the eclipse with Tellus astronomer David Dundee and WSB-TV meteorologist Glenn Burns. They will partner with the College of Natural Sciences Learning Community's Science Outreach Scholars, led by Allie Keller, coordinator of the Learning Community.

Chattahoochee Nature Center will be providing eclipse glasses while supplies last. If you were to drive 45 minutes northwest to Emmett, Idaho, you would be on the border of totality's path, with an eclipse opportunity of under a minute, at around 11:28 a.m. Mountain Standard Time.
