New York licenses five new medical marijuana companies

The New York Medical Cannabis Industry Association, acting on behalf of four of the five original medical marijuana companies, sued the state in April to try to stop it from issuing new licenses.

Meanwhile, a bill to expand the medical marijuana program to cover those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder passed the Legislature this year.

Criminal charges were filed this year against two former executives with Vireo Health, the parent company of Minnesota Medical Solutions, for transporting cannabis oil from Minnesota to an affiliated company in NY.

The fifth new registered organization, NYC-based cannabis oil specialist Citiva Medical, will steer clear of Long Island, manufacturing in Orange County and operating dispensing facilities in Dutchess, Chemung, Kings and Richmond counties.

United States set for 'great' eclipse
Just to the north and east, in parts of Wyoming and Nebraska, viewers will experience the "totality" - a full solar eclipse. Prior to this year's event, the most recent total solar eclipse to pass over the continental United States was in 1979.

The announcement comes as the five current "registered organizations", as they are known, were due for renewal of their licenses, which are good for two years at a time.

Five new organizations have been approved to manufacture and dispense medical marijuana, the state Health Department announced Tuesday.

A company that two years ago was denied a request to grow and manufacture medical marijuana in northern NY will be allowed to do so in Ulster County, the state announced Tuesday.

But in an application submitted to the state two years ago, the company, also known as New York Canna, revealed plans to grow and process marijuana at 241 Farrell Road in a almost 200,000-square-foot building on a site formerly occupied by General Electric and Syroco Inc.

According to the state Department of Health website, there are now four dispensing facilities in New York City: two in Manhattan, one in Queens and one in the Bronx. Among the dispensaries will be two at unspecified locations in Dutchess County - one run by Citiva, the other by Valley Agriceuticals, state health officials said. The company planned to open its growing facility at the former Seneca Army Depot in Romulus.

As of Tuesday 25,736 patients are registered for the program, and 1,139 doctors have signed up to be able to certify patients.

These numbers show that the numbers of users has grown to 72% more since March (10,744 more patients).

The increased number of patients coincides with the addition of chronic pain as a qualifying condition.
