The man was arrested by police at the Eiffel Tower in Paris

According to the website of the newspaper "Le Parisien", the man carrying a knife was arrested while trying to force entry into one of the security checks on the Eiffel Tower on Saturday around 11:30 pm local time, shouting "Allah Akbar" when he acted. The Eiffel Tower reopened as normal at 9 a.m. Sunday.

An investigation is now open, with the man's motives not yet known.

Sources described the suspect as a French national born in Mauritania, western Africa, who left a psychiatric hospital in July.

Pioneering scientists edit genes in embryos to stop inherited diseases
The first, done in China in 2015, involved embryos with serious genetic defects that prevented them from being brought to term. The technique could be used through in vitro fertilization to cure thousands of diseases caused by mutations in single genes.

The suspect, who is in custody, told investigators that he wanted to commit an attack against a soldier and had been in contact with a member of the extremist group Islamic State, sources close to the case told the AFP news agency on August 6.

Armed soldiers who are permanently stationed at the Eiffel Tower ordered him to drop his weapon, which he did without attacking anyone, the source said, asking not to be named.

The tower, which lets visitors enter until midnight, was evacuated an hour later in what a police source said was a standard precaution.

More than 100 other people have been killed in other Islamist terrorist attacks in France during the past two-and-a-half years.

A screen near the bottom of the tower displayed a message welcoming Brazilian star Neymar to the club.
