Allegations that former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn was paid by the Turkish government during the waning days of the 2016 presidential campaign are being investigated by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who has requested documents regarding Flynn from the White House.

They are said to have questioned witnesses about his dealings with Turkish-American lobbyist Ekim Alptekin, who paid his consulting firm Flynn Intel Group $530,000 during the United States election previous year.

Members of the team of the special prosecutor, Robert Mueller have asked for the first time at the White House to provide documents, said Friday the New York Times.

Pres. Trump Says Foxconn Could Triple US Investment Budget
But doing so requires approval from a Republican-controlled Legislature that still hasn't passed a 2017-19 state budget. Foxconn is the world's largest contract maker of electronics and has factories throughout mainland China.

Witnesses interviewed by Mr Mueller's team claim two $40,000 payments from Flynn Intel Group to Inovo are being investigated as suspected bribes to Mr Alptekin.

Asked for comment on the story presidential lawyer Ty Cobb said the White House would not discuss "specific communications" with Mueller but would "continue to fully cooperate with the Special Counsel". If that money actually came from the Turkish government itself, Flynn could face a felony charge for not declaring himself a foreign agent or other charges for trying to hide the source of the money.

The Times reported that prosecutors have been investigating Flynn's business dealings with a Turkish-American businessman who worked with Flynn previous year, and are trying to determine if the Turkish government was behind payments to Flynn.

Mueller, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation director, took over the Russian Federation probe after Trump fired his own Federal Bureau of Investigation director, James Comey, in May. He is also looking at whether Trump committed obstruction of justice by asking Comey to drop the investigation into Flynn.

Mueller has impaneled a grand jury in Washington for the overarching Russian Federation probe, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday, a sign of the investigation entering a new phase.
